[No envelope. Elizabeth Dickey Evans, who transcribed these letters, placed this one after the postcard dated Nov. 23, 1899 and before the letter dated Dec. 15, 1899. Date has been assigned to preserve the sequence. Written while Janet was attending Pictou Academy.]
[Note at top of page:] Of course money is very scarce so be careful.
Monday Evening
Dear Janet
I got your letter as you see, you can do just as you like, get a cape, never mind if it is like Annie’s, I am sure hers is pretty. Papa has gone up to Mrs. Fred Morrison’s to prayer meeting, such a pouring rain too, he won’t be home till Wednesday night; intends to visit.
Vinie & I put in a quilt this afternoon. Tom Robertson was here ploughing this morning. Mrs. Duncan Neil lost her baby, as the children say they saw somebody digging its grave, born dead, I suppose. Dr. Filligans (W. Ross) has taken Mr. McIver’s man’s place, and is a neighbour now. Ida is here to-night.
Your affectionate mother Alice Cairns.
[On back of page:] Your parcel will likely go Friday when Vinie goes home. I found another flannellette shirt for you.
