Sketch of the Slave Hold Design for the Slave Ship Brookes.

This image was produced to illustrate how enslaved Africans destined for the Americas were crammed into the hold of the slave ship Brookes. It shows 454 people, the maximum allowed by British law from 1788. In fact, the Brookes carried as many as 609 at one time. Thomas Waters Sr., was partly responsible for the freeing of an estimated 4-5000 slaves while serving in the Royal Marines. Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons.
