Musquodoboit August 28th 1904

Dear John   It is with much sorrow that we received the tidings that your dear wife had passed away to her eternal home we trust to an Heavenly one, but we cannot picture your sorrow in your loneliness, rest assured you have our deepest sympathy in your sore bereavement truly Gods ways are not always our ways

My Son saithe he with patient mind

Endure the chastening rod

Believe where by affliction tried

That thou art loved by God      for the Bible says whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, rest assured that it is done in kindness or for some good purpose, perhaps you loved the gift more than the giver, or it may be he has taken your treasure that where your treasure is your heart will follow, how I wish I could have been with you but there is a friend that sticketh closer than any of our earthly friends, seek Him

Tell Mrs, Wickham that I know how to sympathise with her in this sore trial, may the Lord comfort you all, I was counting on sending some things to Annabelle with some of those that are going on the harvest excursion but that is past but I will send you a bottle of maple syrup with George Archibald if he will take it for me

Thou art gone loved Annabelle from earth thou has gone

To that Haven of glory and rest

Thou hast fought the good fight thou hast conquered at last

And thy spirit exults with the blest

When to lengthen thy span every effort was made

The heart that enshrined the was riven

But our loss is thy gain thy exceeding great gain

For freed from that bondage of sorrow and pain

Thou art holy and happy in heaven

Now I want you to write me all the particulars about her sickness and death when you feel able to do so how is your grain this year have you a hand for harvesting yet there are two of Will Archibald’s boys going and Welden Dickey is going either of them are good men to work

hoping to hear from you soon I remain your loving mother may the Lord have you in his keeping is the wish of us all
