Poplar Grove, Sask.,

Friday 27th July, 1906

Dear Janet,

I am glad this is my last letter. Your steamer letter just came. Amy will be glad to go to Wwood as you suggest. Amy, John, Tom Bob & Bert and I, myself went to Poplar Grove picnic yesterday near Mrs. McPhersons. Mrs. Archibald was there and her news was that Archie Gillis is to be married in about a month, and that you were hurrying home to take charge of that new school near Wwood. Miss Yorke has resigned and they want you to take Poplar Grove school.

Last Sunday I went to Wapella and Ravine Bank with Papa. I had an ulcerated tooth, and Dr. McDonald of Wapella put chloroform on it and took it out, then he insisted upon us staying there all night, so we did. Papa preaches in Moosomin Sunday. Mr. Naismith has sacrament, else he would preach there and Papa preach for him. When we came home Monday, Mr. Allen was here to dinner. I have had jaw-ache all this week. Walter Miller & his father, John Scott, Ed. Scott & poor Walter Winn, Robert Nicholson’s and lots of others were hailed out two days ago. Mrs. Angus McDonald has gone to Winnipeg to an hospital to have a tumor removed, Mr. Angus went down too on Monday, he was to have come back to-day. Mr. Mathie has been here to-day doing road-work. We have poppies and sweet peas out. Our green peas will be in their prime when you come if we do not get hailed out. Such overpoweringly sultry warm weather.

Amy has taken one music lesson from Miss B. Smith, and expects another to-morrow morning. She has practised faithfully, but thinks fancy work would be more profitable. Mrs. Dean says if you should take Poplar Grove school you could board with her; I told her that would be an inducement, but that I was predjudiced against Poplar Grove school.

I remain

Your affectionate Mother Alice Cairns.
