Barney’s River,

April 3rd Tuesday

Dear Janet,

Papa went up to Mr. Alec Bannerman’s to baptize Bob Foote’s baby. I think Mr. & Mrs. Foote intend joining the church in the summer, anyway Tina wanted to have things settled before she came to church again. Bob goes regularly. The dreadful children have gone to bed, it is ten now I sent them an hour ago, but they are carrying on dreadfully howling and playing.

Papa has not come back such a rain I think he won’t, and I am anxious about the young cow, she has been threatening to have a calf for a month. We have a lamb, and I think its mother will die soon. Papa dosed her with salts and turpentine to-day. The turkey has laid 6 eggs. Papa did not go to Glenbard. I hope Mr. McKay will come. Mr. Fraser is coming with his views next Wednesday you must come Wednesday if not sooner. I hope Annie will really come. We washed to-day and I baked cinnamon cookies. I am trying to have some baking done so you and Annie can have a hooking party. Papa is quite bankrupt just now, he has been paid very little since Xmas, you can only pay your board, and leave the wheel till he gets a little money. I cannot get Amy even a new hat to go to New Glasgow with, but when you and Annie come perhaps you can fix her up. Amy has her formal invitations out for Monday the 9th. It would be nice to get her a present but perhaps we cannot afford it. Kit has about an inch of her tail cut nearly off, and she hurts it sometimes and acts as though she were going to fly right at Bobby with horrible cries. If you choose a business career you should study French and German as well as shorthand & typewriting.

Amy left me her pen & ink when she went to bed, but no paper and as I could not think of going to the study for paper, I took wrapping paper. I wont post this till I see what Papa says about coming home on Friday. Perhaps you had better get Amy the beads anyway for a birthday present as well as the bone affair. If Annie comes you can have a better party. Bertha Dewar’s sister Alice is home I wish there would be a wedding.

[Janet’s Father’s writing:]

You will have to leave the Bicycle in the Custom house till you go back as I have no money at all just now. I may have some after holidays + get us half a pound of insect powder as the lamb is bothered terribly with ticks. You can come home this week—on Friday if you wish—& stay till after Holidays.

Our old sheep is going to die: Buy a nipple to go on a bottle to feed the lamb.
