July 18th 1895

Thursday Evening.

Dear Janet,

I just got your letter, but I suppose it came yesterday. Millie brought yours in yesterday to Millie but I was so very busy just then I could not read it, only glanced through. Your pansies are growing & blossoming nicely. I just said where the baby could hear, not knowing he knew the name pansies, “Janet’s pansies are growing so well,” he gave me one look so knowing and walked right down & picked one although he has not done that since you went away.

Maria came home yesterday with her sore leg which is a great nuisance, she straned the cords by the knee somehow. Libbie Henry is with her quite a pretty girl, but not of much use in taking care of the baby, or in doing anything. Libbie Grant will stay till Saturday. We get along quite well, put down 10 quarts of preserves to-day, gooseberries. Currants are all ripe Tom says Ma-ir for Maria so prettily. I cannot keep him from eating gooseberries & currants, still he manages to keep well.

Now for your letter. If you have not started for home and are not too homesick I would like you to stay till Cassie McKay & Rena Matheson come. But yet if you really feel miserable come home. I want your visit to do you good not harm. You would have to watch for a chance with some one to St. John to take care of you till you were put on the train in St. John. Have you got it planned? Your plans about next summer would be very nice, but I think your objections or the hindrance you mentioned would be too great. Money is scarce & cabbages will not head up without rain.

Try and not be homesick, just think of dragging after the baby all day, running errands upstairs & down, helping Maria with her lame leg, being bothered by John, teased by Amy etc. I do not think Alice Hawkesworth & I look alike, only we had the same name & were nearly the same age. I think you have been very economical. It was very kind of Mrs. Stephen to get you the new dress, & just like her, I think it very pretty. I am glad you are getting around so much. You will have had two letters from me before you get this. You have not been so long away yet. I have not seen Annabelle or Martha since you left. Mrs. Stirling & one of the boys are over, just see what you miss! You might go up and call on the Dunwoodies while he was there; never mind, perhaps you will be home in time, & I will get you an errand up or invite Sandy down. His beauty, you know!

Nothing has happened since you left worth speaking about. Mrs. Smart thinks of going back with Christina and stay a year, I hope she may go although I shall miss her vary much, I think she will enjoy herself. Wims was in today but I did not have to see him as I was changing my dress. Amy was up at Saltsprings Saturday-Sunday. I had to wash and do up her dress after that. Vinie Monroe is staying with Cassie McKays Mother. Papa says he will write to Cassie McKay and find out the exact day they will come back, if you wish to come with them. I have cleaned the lamps once since you left; they have not all got dirty again yet. I am getting quite sleepy and there really is nothing more to write about. Libbie & I swept & cleaned the study & John’s bedroom to-day. We expect, if we don’t give out, to do spare room & your room to-morrow. Libbie sleeps in spare room, but if we clean it she will sleep in your bed for one night. She is picking gooseberries to take home. Mary McIntosh is to go & visit at Libbie’s when Libbie goes. John and Amy eat the Turkey’s eggs with great relish. All your flowers seem to do better since you left. Your mignonette is going to seed fast, but I am watching it, to save the seeds. Well it is quarter past ten and I must go to bed, so good night Darling.

I remain

Your affectionate

Mother Alice Cairns

John has a new eight cent straw hat. Tom just loves to get Johns hats on and march out doors. Papa put John’s coat on him the other day and he did not want it taken off.
