[No envelope. This letter is one of several written to Janet Cairns Dickey by her parents while she was visiting her grandmother, Amaret Dakin Waters, in Digby, N.S. during the summer of 1895. She was 12 years old at the time.]
Thursday evening
My own dear Janet,
The house is all quiet Libbie & the children are in bed, Papa has taken Miss Thompson over to Durham and will not be back till nearly ten, so I can write. Miss Thompson will not be back till Sunday perhaps, she has been a great help taking care of Tom, keeps him so quiet and happy, we got through wash day beautifully. Yesterday (Wednes) Libbie went to the picnic after a great many givings up on account of the rain. Eliza Smart came in the afternoon to pick gooseberries and she helped me get tea & wash dishes. Then Rosie & Marry McIntosh came and stayed all night and all this morning till Libbie came back Rosie did everything helped me so much. Libbie had a very pleasant time at the picnic, brought the children home some candy. Altogether I am getting along very well. Papa was away too all night in New Glasgow, he saw
Mr. Smith there, and on the train this morning were Mr. Olliver & his wife & family going to Digby, perhaps if you like it in Digby you might stay till they came back & come with them. I do hope you will have a nice time & feel contented and not homesick, but if you are let me know and you can come home somehow alone perhaps. Tom is as bad to the turkeys as ever holds them up by the wings & necks. Barbara & Mary came over yesterday in the rain all dressed up as young ladies I knew them, John did not. Rody cut down all our hay to-day, we wont have much. We had our first red currants for tea. I do hope you will enjoy yourself, but come home as soon as you like.
I have not found it any harder to get along without you.
I remain
Your Affectionate
Mother Alice Cairns.
The picnic to Nappen did not take place.
